Gunskirchen Lager
During the last few months of World War II, in the so-called Hochholz near Gunskirchen (municipal area of Edt bei Lambach), there was a subcamp of Mauthausen. In the spring of 1945, more than 20,000 prisoners were forced here on the Death Marches, starting from Mauthausen, Gusen and many forced labour camps; 6,000 of them were murdered on the way or died from exhaustion.
Conditions in the camp were barbarous. There was hardly any water or food, and between 100 and 200 inmates died daily from hunger or typhoid fever.
On May 4th, 1945 the camp was liberated by the US American army.
